Telematics Insurance and Your No Claims Bonus

Here's the short version. A telematics policy builds your no claims bonus exactly like any other comprehensive cover, then hands you a second discount on top for driving well.

Two reward systems, one policy. Your no claims bonus grows a year at a time, every year you don't claim. Your driving score works quietly in the background, nudging your renewal price down based on how you actually drive.

Plenty of guides blur the two together. They shouldn't, because knowing the difference is how you stop leaving money on the table.

Does telematics insurance affect your no claims bonus?

Telematics insurance does not change how your no claims bonus works. You still earn one year of no claims discount for every 12 months you go without a claim. Telematics adds a separate, behaviour-based discount on top of that bonus.

The two run in parallel. Your no claims bonus looks backwards at your claims history. Your telematics score looks at the present, measuring how you drive right now. One rewards a clean record, the other rewards smooth driving, and on a telematics policy you collect both.

A no claims bonus rewards every consecutive year you drive without making a claim. Each claim-free year earns one year of no claims discount, and the discount grows the longer your clean record runs.

No claims discounts vary from insurer to insurer. According to the 

, they can reach as much as 30% after one claim-free year and 60% after five [1].

Make a claim and you usually lose some of those years, unless you've paid to protect your bonus. Protected policies typically let you make a couple of claims over a three to five year period without losing your discount, though your premium can still move.

How is telematics insurance different from a no claims bonus?

A no claims bonus measures your claims history, while telematics measures your driving behaviour. The bonus is earned slowly over years of not claiming. The telematics discount is earned in real time, from your acceleration, braking, cornering, speed and rest.

Neither one cancels the other out. They stack, and that's the point.

Can you build a no claims bonus on a telematics policy?

Yes. A telematics policy is still a standard comprehensive insurance policy, so every claim-free year on it earns a year of no claims bonus, just like conventional cover.

The difference is what happens alongside that. While your no claims years tick up, your driving score is also building a picture of how careful you are. Come renewal, your insurer can price off both, your clean record and your real driving data, rather than guessing from your age and postcode alone.

For careful drivers, that combination usually beats waiting on a bonus alone, which is the heart of whether

Do you lose your no claims bonus if you claim on a telematics policy?

Making an at-fault claim on a telematics policy affects your no claims bonus the same way it would on any comprehensive cover. You typically lose some no claims years unless you've protected your bonus. Your telematics score is separate and reflects your driving, not your claims.

Can you protect a no claims bonus on telematics insurance?

No claims bonus protection depends on the insurer and the policy, so check the policy terms before you assume it's included. Protection guards your earned no claims years against a set number of claims. It does not freeze your premium, which can still change at renewal based on wider pricing and, on a telematics policy, your driving score.

Does a telematics driving score replace a no claims bonus?

Charging an electric car in the UK costs anywhere from around 5p per kWh on an off-peak home tariff to 79p per kWh at a public ultra-rapid charger. For a typical 60kWh battery with roughly 200 miles of range, that is the difference between about £3 to £5 for a full charge overnight and closer to £47 at a motorway services.

So the honest answer to "how much does it cost" is another question: where, and when, are you plugging in? Get that part right and an EV is one of the cheapest things on the road to run. Get it wrong and you can pay more per mile than a petrol car. This guide walks through the realistic scenarios with current 2026 figures, so you can work out your own number rather than someone else's.

Charging at home on a standard variable tariff costs 24.67p per kWh as of the Ofgem price cap for April to June 2026. A full charge of a 60kWh battery works out at around £14.80, and a 100kWh battery at about £24.67.

Ofgem has already confirmed the July to September figure at 26.11p/kWh, so home charging will nudge up a little over the summer.

Here is what a full charge costs at the standard rate across three common 



These assume a full 0% to 100% charge. In real life most people top up from 20% or 30%, so the cost per session is usually lower. Around 80% of UK charging happens at home, so for most owners this is the rate that matters most.

A dedicated EV tariff changes the maths completely. Off-peak overnight rates currently sit between roughly 5p and 9p per kWh, against 24.67p on the standard cap. That brings a full 60kWh charge down to around £3 to £5.

These tariffs split your bill into a cheap overnight window, usually somewhere between 11:30pm and 5:30am, and a higher daytime rate. You set the car to charge while you sleep and pay a fraction of the standard price.

The market moved in drivers' favour in April 2026. 

 tariff, now advertised at 8p/kWh and dropping as low as 5.49p/kWh in some regions [2]. 

 sit broadly in the 7p to 9p range. Most need a smart meter, and the fully automated versions want a compatible car or a smart charger such as an Ohme, Zappi or Hypervolt unit.

At 8p per kWh, a full 60kWh charge costs about £4.80. At the standard cap, the same charge is £14.80. Over a year that gap alone is worth several hundred pounds, which is roughly the difference between an EV tariff being a nice idea and being the single best money decision you make as an EV owner.

One detail worth knowing: with the whole-home versions, the cheap rate covers everything in the house during the off-peak window, not just the car. Run the dishwasher and the washing machine overnight and the savings stack up beyond charging.

At the standard price cap, home charging works out at roughly 7p per mile, based on a typical real-world efficiency of around 3.5 miles per kWh. On an off-peak EV tariff at 8p per kWh, that drops to about 2p per mile.

For comparison, a petrol car averaging 40mpg at current pump prices of around 135p per litre costs near 15p to 16p per mile in fuel, according to the 

 [3]. Even on standard-rate electricity, home charging is roughly half the per-mile cost of petrol. On an overnight tariff, it is closer to a seventh.

Your own figure will vary. A heavy SUV in January might manage 2.8 miles per kWh, while a small hatchback in mild weather can beat 4. Use your car's real number for an accurate sum, but 3.5 is a fair average across the UK fleet.

Public charging is the priciest way to power an EV. According to the 

 Price Index for May 2026, the weighted average pay-as-you-go price was 54p per kWh on slow and fast chargers, and 79p per kWh on rapid and ultra-rapid units [4].

That works out at roughly 16p per mile on slower public chargers and around 24p per mile on rapid ones. On a per-mile basis, rapid public charging can cost more than running a petrol car, which is the bit that surprises new owners.

Rapid networks vary a lot. Among the top 10 in May 2026, prices ran from 63p to 92p per kWh. 

 Superchargers, now open to non-Tesla drivers, were among the cheapest at 63p/kWh in daytime hours, while 

 Smart Charge (72p/kWh) sit in between [4].

The pay-as-you-go price is the headline rate with no membership. Plenty of networks offer subscriptions, app discounts or time-bound deals, so the real price most drivers pay is often lower than the figure on the screen. It pays to have an app or two and plan around the cheaper stops.

Not really, not any more. Supermarkets led the way with free charging in the early days, but most have switched to paid. 

 ended free charging back in November 2022 and now charges from 44p per kWh, and 

 Smart Charge is paid too. A handful of Aldi and Asda stores still have free slower units, but they are the exception now rather than the rule.

A 7kW home wallbox fully charges a typical 60kWh EV in around 8 to 10 hours, adding roughly 25 to 30 miles of range per hour. That is built for overnight charging, which is how most owners use it. A public rapid charger, by contrast, can take you from 10% to 80% in around 30 to 45 minutes, enough for a coffee and a leg stretch.

A standard three-pin plug works in an emergency, but it is slow, often 24 hours or more for a full charge, and not designed to run at full power for that long. For daily life, a dedicated wallbox is the one to have.

A 7kW home wallbox typically costs £800 to £1,200 installed. The government's EV chargepoint grant covers up to £350 towards installation for eligible homes, mainly flats and rental properties with off-street parking.

Pairing a wallbox with an EV tariff is what unlocks the lowest overnight rates, so for anyone with a driveway it usually pays for itself fairly quickly. If you can charge at home, the savings against petrol are substantial. If you lean on public charging, an EV is still usually cheaper to run, but the margin tightens and depends heavily on which networks you use.

Battery size and efficiency set your charging bill more than anything else. A small, efficient car sipping 4 miles per kWh costs noticeably less to run than a big SUV doing 2.8, even on the same tariff. If you are still choosing a car, our pick of the

The bottom line is simple. Charge at home overnight on an EV tariff and you are looking at roughly 2p a mile, which is about as cheap as motoring gets in the UK. Rely on motorway rapid chargers for everything and the savings shrink fast. The fuel type sets the starting point. How you charge sets the final number.

Are Electric Cars Worth It for UK Delivery Drivers? Top 5 for 2026

Petrol hit an average of 157p a litre across the UK in April 2026, per RAC Fuel Watch. For a full-time delivery driver doing 25,000 miles a year, that's the difference between paying around £3,500 a year on fuel in a Toyota Prius and roughly £600 in an EV on a cheap home tariff. The question every Deliveroo, Uber Eats, and Amazon Flex driver is now asking is whether the higher purchase price, the insurance loading, and the charging logistics make up the gap. The honest answer: it depends on your setup.

Below is the short answer to "are EVs worth it for delivery driving?", the five electric cars that actually earn their keep on UK delivery shifts, and the buying criteria that decide whether the maths works for you specifically.

Short answer: are EVs worth it for delivery drivers?

, electric cars can be worth it, if you have home charging access and you do at least 15,000 miles a year for your deliveries. Running cost drops from roughly 13–14p a mile in a Prius to 2–4p a mile in an EV on a cheap overnight tariff. For a typical full-time delivery driver that's £2,000–£3,000 a year saved on fuel before tax. Hire and reward insurance is slightly higher than petrol equivalents in 2026 (~10–15% more, per Thatcham), but not enough to flip the maths.

 if you don't have a driveway or workplace charger, if you do mostly rural or motorway work, or if you drive under 8,000 miles a year. Public rapid charging at 70p+ a kWh closes the running-cost gap to roughly zero, and a hybrid Prius beats an EV on total cost of ownership at low mileage. Stick with the Prius in those cases. It's still the smart choice for plenty of drivers.

Running cost figures throughout assume mixed charging (mostly home, occasional rapid) at typical 2026 UK prices and around 4 miles per kWh real-world efficiency.

 drivers who flip between Deliveroo dinner shifts, Amazon Flex blocks, and the occasional Uber Eats run. Anyone who needs a do-everything car without spending Tesla money.

The Leaf has been on UK roads since 2011 and a used 40 kWh model from 2018 onwards now sits in the £10k–£14k bracket. The newer 62 kWh Leaf e+ pushes that closer to £18k but stretches WLTP range to 239 miles, which translates to roughly 200 in real-world delivery work with the heater on. The 435-litre boot is the biggest in this list outside the Niro and will swallow an XL Deliveroo bag plus a stack of small Amazon parcels.

Running cost on a 7p overnight tariff comes out around 1.75p a mile. Mixed home and rapid charging closer to 8p.

Strongest used market of any EV in the UK; easy to find with a clean service history

Big boot for a hatchback, fits parcel and food bags

Reliable powertrain; few mechanical horror stories on the 40 kWh battery

Older models use CHAdeMO for rapid charging, which is being phased out of new charge points

2. Kia Niro EV — the parcel and Amazon Flex pick

 parcel couriers and Amazon Flex drivers who need real cargo space and don't want to drive a van.

The Niro EV's 475-litre boot is the largest on this list and the closest you'll get to a small estate in EV form. With the rear seats folded it climbs above 1,400 litres, which matters if you're running back-to-back Flex blocks. WLTP range is 282 miles, and the seven-year Kia warranty (transferable to subsequent owners) is the longest of any mainstream EV.

Used prices sit in the £18k–£28k range depending on year and trim, a step up from a Leaf but cheaper than a Tesla Model 3. Running cost on mixed charging is roughly 8p a mile. The 77 kW DC peak charging speed gets you from 10% to 80% in around 45 minutes.

Biggest practical boot of any EV in this list

7-year warranty, including the battery, transferable to next owner

Comfortable for long shifts; better seats than the Leaf

Pricier entry point than a Leaf; used market is thinner

DC charging peaks at 77 kW, so newer Hyundai and Kia models on the E-GMP platform (EV6, Ioniq 5) will outpace it at rapid chargers

 drivers who want to buy new (not used), who do reliable full-time delivery work, and want the longest possible warranty on a car they plan to keep.

The MG4 starts under £27,000 new and the Long Range trim manages 281 miles WLTP. The 363-litre boot is mid-pack but enough for most food and parcel work. MG offers a seven-year/80,000-mile warranty on the car and battery, a useful hedge against high-mileage delivery use.

The watch-out is residual value. MG resale is still less predictable than Korean or German rivals, so if you plan to flip the car after 18 months you may take a depreciation hit. If you plan to keep it for five years and rack up miles, the maths works.

4. Renault Zoe — the cheapest legitimate way in

 drivers who exclusively do short-trip city food delivery (Deliveroo, Uber Eats, Just Eat) and want the lowest possible entry cost.

A 2019 or 2020 Renault Zoe ZE40 sits in the £8k–£11k bracket. A newer ZE50 with a 52 kWh battery and a real-world 200-mile range can be found around £12k–£14k. It's a five-door supermini, easy to park outside busy restaurants, and the running cost is the lowest in this list at around 1.5p a mile on a cheap home tariff.

The catches are real. Older Zoes had a battery lease arrangement where you didn't own the battery outright; check the V5 carefully on anything pre-2020. Boot space is 338 litres, which is fine for food bags but tight for parcel work. Build quality is functional rather than premium.

Genuinely the cheapest way to switch from petrol to electric

Easy to park, easy to drive, no learning curve from a petrol Corsa or Fiesta
