A day in the Life of a Third Party Claims Handler - Tim

Hi Tim, how are you doing today?

Hello, I'm very well, thank you for inviting me to take part.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your career background before joining Zego?

I have been working in insurance for over 15 years and my experience includes handling home, motor, pet and travel claims for various insurers and a law firm. I have handled claims for Mid Net-Worth and High Net-Worth clients within private banking, completed a talent pathway to become a Technical Co-Ordinator and achieved the CII Insurance Diploma. I also run an Ebay shop in my spare time!

What made you decide to transition from a law firm to an insur-tech company like Zego?

A friend of mine actually recommended Zego to me as a forward thinking business that was like no other they had worked for. It was clear that Zego is trying to do something different to disrupt the sector, and I wanted to be part of that.

What does a typical day look like as a Third Party Claims Handler at Zego?

No day is the same at Zego, one minute I could be negotiating vehicle damage settlements, reviewing credit hire payment packs, valuing an injury claim and the next reviewing dash cam footage, looking at court proceedings or being a referral point for others in the team. Often all the above and I love it!

What types of claims do you handle, and how do you approach them?

I manage third-party credit hire and injury claims from initial notification to settlement, ensuring each case is handled fairly and strategically.

Every claim is assessed on its individual merits, based on the strength of evidence presented by both sides. Taking an unbiased, court-focused approach is crucial—anticipating how a judge would likely rule helps mitigate risk. Arguing weak cases could lead to unnecessary costs for Zego, making this critical evaluation process essential to protecting both the company and its policyholders.

How does your legal background help you in this role?

Having an understanding of things like the rules of contract, offers and acceptance and case law all help with the confidence to negotiate, agree or decline cases. When you negotiate with the other side and you have an understanding of things like litigation and case law, it makes them more likely to settle as they can’t bully you into accepting something that they are not entitled to.

What’s your favourite thing about your job?

What I love most is the opportunity to make a real impact—Zego values input from its people and actively involves them in decision-making. If you bring solutions to the table, they listen.

I also appreciate how I can apply everything I’ve learned throughout my career in my daily work, continuously growing and contributing. Plus, I’m fortunate to work with a fantastic, supportive team that always has each other’s backs.

What advice would you give to someone in a law firm considering a move into claims handling roles directly for an insurer?

I would say that working for an insurer is completely different to the environment of working at a law firm. Zego wants their employees to feel empowered and comfortable to perform their roles to the best of their ability, without feeling constrained by processes they can’t change.

What’s next for you? What excites you most about the future at Zego?

I have recently been promoted to Senior Third Party Handler, so I'm excited to see how I can help others within the team to develop their skills and knowledge.

I think there is a lot to look forward to over the next 12 months, including how we can implement AI into our daily roles, more Sharedo system updates and not to mention personal car insurance going live!
