What’s the difference between a Letter of Enrolment and a Certificate of Motor Insurance?

When it comes to your insurance documents, it’s good to know what each one is for. Some explain all of the terms and inclusions of your policy, while others provide proof that you’re insured to drive.

Let’s take a closer look at 2 of your most important documents: the Letter of Enrolment and Certificate of Insurance.

Letter of Enrolment

The Letter of Enrolment (LOE) is a document that tells your work providers (such as Deliveroo or Uber Eats) that we promise to provide you with insurance while you’re working a shift with them.

It’s essentially evidence that you’ve gone through our underwriting criteria, have been found eligible for our pay-as-you-go (Flex) insurance, and have been given a price for your cover.

This gives your work provider confidence that, when you’re on shift, you have the necessary legal cover to use your vehicle to make deliveries.

Your Letter of Enrolment states:

  • The start and end date of your enrolment of cover*
  • Your vehicle details
  • The type of vehicle use and driving you’re covered for
  • Any limitations to that use

*This is a restricted period, so work providers are confident that you’re covered during that time. We’ll keep checking your details, and may remove cover if you fall outside of our underwriting criteria, or stop using our insurance.

It’s important to know that the Letter of Enrolment is not a standard insurance document, or proof of insurance. It’s only proof that, at the time of your enrolment, you passed our underwriting criteria and (as long as your payments are kept up-to-date by topping up in the app) you’d be given third-party insurance by us.

Certificate of Insurance

Your Certificate of Insurance is your proof of insurance cover.

This document is what the police will use to prove you have the necessary insurance to use your vehicle for that specific journey – for example, to deliver fast food.

The certificate does not display your level of cover (like Comprehensive, or Third Party Fire and Theft) and does not show all the exclusions of your cover. All of that detail is included in your policy wording.

Your Certificate of Insurance explains:

  • When your cover starts and ends (date and time)
  • The vehicle registration being covered
  • Who the policyholder is
  • Who can drive the vehicle
  • What they can, and cannot use the vehicle for

The content of the Certificate of Insurance is set by The Motor Vehicles (Third Party Risks) Regulations. So, while there may be differences in the way insurers present information in their certificates, you can rest assured that they all show the same things.

Information in your Certificate of Insurance – such as the start and end date, policyholder, drivers and vehicle(s) insured – will also be reflected on the Motor Insurance Database.

Where can I find my Certificate of Insurance?

If you’re a pay-as-you-go (Flex) customer, you’ll find a copy of your Certificate of Insurance after each shift in the Zego Delivery app. The certificate will show the start and end date of your most recent shift.

If you have a 30-day or Annual delivery policy with us, your Certificate of Insurance will be sent to you and available in the app as soon as you’ve bought your policy.

Can I drive abroad using my Certificate of Insurance?

If you’re a 30-day or Annual customer, your Certificate of Insurance will provide evidence of your insurance in any of the EU or EEA states (no green card needed).

However, if you’re a pay-as-you-go customer, you won’t be able to use your Certificate of Insurance when travelling abroad. That’s because your cover only comes into effect when your vehicle is being used for a delivery for one of your linked work providers here in the UK.
